Double Rose Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera ‘Rosea Plena’)

Double Rose Lotus
Nelumbo nucifera ‘Rosea Plena’
(nee-LUM-bo) (noo-SIFF-er-uh)

These are some Lotus photos from the BBG. Overall they have a world class collection it was however not presented the best it could have been. That is all I am going to say about it. I got in free because we have a membership at the New York Botanical Garden and it was $12 to park. Afterwards I noticed that there was some free on street parking available.

This is a different cultivar of Lotus and it was quite pretty also.

Even the buds looked good.

”You must be a lotus, unfolding its petals when the sun rises in the sky, unaffected by the slush where it is born or even the water which sustains it!”
Sai Baba

Lotus are definitely on our list of plants for our pond in the future. I've seen some at the Fruit and Spice Park in Miami and supposedly they are native to Florida as well, but I've yet to see one in the wild.

misti,
I think you will enjoy growing Lotus. I love the F&S Park in Miami. Geez, they have some weird stuff there, which is great.

xris,

I can never keep the neighborhoods straight down there. I visited quite a few of them when I got lost. So I had a tour of Brooklyn and the Garden.

I'm glad you posted some pictures of lotus. I tried to grow some last year in our fish pond but I think the temperature was too cold when I put the potted tuber in the pond and it didn't sprout new leaves. I also tried planting the Asian grocery store tubers with no success. Wonderful photos. The seed pod looks as interesting as the flower.

One of my favorite stories of lotus was from Joseph Campbell. Here's an excerpt from the wisdom portal site:
http://www.wisdomportal.com/
Enlightenment/IndraUniverses.html

"Brahma sits on a lotus, the symbol of divine energy and divine grace. The lotus grows from the navel of Vishnu, who is the sleeping god, whose dream is the universe..."Just think, Vishnu sleeps in the cosmic ocean, and the lotus of the universe grows from his navel. On the lotus sits Brahma, the creator. Brahma opens his eyes, and a world comes into being, governed by an Indra. Brahma closes his eyes, and a world goes out of being. The life of a Brahma is 432,000 years. When he dies, the lotus goes back, and another lotus is formed, and another Brahma."

The lotus is forever linked to the image of it growing out of Vishnu's navel in my mind.
