When I went to look information on this flower there wasn’t much. The main quest for knowledge was the Dalina series and again not much luck. We have been growing them for a few years now both in containers and the cutting garden. The compact plants are free flowering and easy to grow. We deadhead ours but that is probably not even necessary. There is a really nice mix of colors and they start blooming weeks ahead of the other types of Dahlias.

The band show went pretty well with only a few technical glitches. I remembered to relax and have fun. There were a few old friends that made the trek out to the venue and it was nice to see them.

This was is one of the massive loads of annuals we bought yesterday. I spent all day going from one farm to next. Apparently I am not the only one with messed up timing this year as there was a good selection of flowers and a lot of customers. Getting what I needed was easy but there wasn’t enough room to carry everything in the truck so I will be going back to claim some more prizes today. Getting everything planted by the weekend is going to be tricky but possible.

Dalinas are nice to have in the garden. They don’t require staking and seem pretty free flowering. Of course they do not have the flower size that most of the regular Dahlias do but make up for it by producing a lot of flowers in a good range of colors. This one is going into the cutting garden along with some Zinnias, Cosmos and Annual Asters. Some of the perennial asters and mums from last year survived the winter so they are in the mix too.

Orange flowers aren’t my favorite but over the years they have become more beautiful to my eye. ‘Samoa’ is a nice dark shade of orange and the flowers look nice growing against the dark green foliage. I have been very happy growing the Dalina type of Dahlias. They are short (big bonus, no staking) and seem to produce a lot of flowers. The color range is also good. They are mostly named after far off tropical locations, which is always fun when planting them in our cold, damp spring.


Here is another Dahlia. It looks like a Cactus type even though the tag said ‘Bishop of Oxford’. I am pretty sure that name is wrong but it is still a beautiful flower.

For planting in front of the Dahlia garden this year we are going to try some Dahlina Dahlias. They are from the Proven Winners people.

We have never grown this plant before so I will have to report back later as to its performance. From a potted standpoint they seem quite beautiful and almost like a smaller version on your typical Decorative Dahlia with the same vivid colors. I was lucky to get six varieties.

The Dahlinas come in three different series and as far as I can tell the series are mini, midi and grande. All the plants I got were in the Grande® Series. These two hybrids reach a final height of 18 to 24 inches. They should prove to be interesting and will probably be a lot more cooperative than the Cosmos we usually use in front of the Dinnerplate and Decorative Dahlias.
