The new roses went in the big rose garden and some how we ended up with 8 specimens of ‘Tropicana’. Three are old stock and that indicates good hardiness to me. It is such a classy and stately rose that I am happy to have a lot of them. This rose is easily in my top five of all time. The color is a little different on the second picture because that rose gets a little more shade (still mostly full sun). I briefly entertained the thought of doing some disbudding to make them all bloom at once but that timing will be to hard to pull off with the nature of this garden. They are having a huge wedding (400+ guests) there this weekend and we did everything we could to make it perfect. The roses didn’t really cooperate but were showing some color and the foliage is clean.

Well I caused quite a stir on a guitar forum that I read and post on. The topic was modifying my 1959 Fender Jazzmaster. It caused a big storm with 99% of people against it. I want to use the neck on another guitar but I half expected death threats because of that. The neck is the only thing that I really like about the guitar but it will be kept stock for now.

This name of this orange is unknown to me. It was a literal explosion of color. Orange roses are relatively new to rose growing (compared to the other colors) first making the scene in the early 1900’s after breeders combined yellow and traditional red roses. They soon became very popular. The color palette for orange roses ranges from red-orange to soft coral and the flowers are used to symbolize an attraction or the desire to peruse a relationship with the recipient. They an also signify pride and can be given for graduations and other accomplishments.

In the garden orange flowers are always a delicate subject. When I ask a customer what color they like in the garden there seems to be a 65 percent chance they will say anything but orange. For me orange flowers are not my favorite but often are striking and fun to have. This Hibiscus, which is a double flowered type, has been blooming like crazy since the slugs have left it alone. The pet and kid safe slug bait with Iron phosphate seems to be working great.

Having a couple of Hibiscus around adds a bit of a tropical flair to the gardens here. They can over winter in the house but they often get infested with different insects. If you can keep them pest free they will keep putting on a show in the house.

There are a lot of orange roses out there and some are better than others. 'Vavoom' is a Floribunda rose that was introduced in 2007. World renowned hybridizer Tom Carruth and Weeks Roses brought it to the market. So far it has done well and other than the flowers being a little small it seems like a good disease resistant and free flowering rose.

This flower isn’t as pretty as some of the ones on this bush during the season. I just happened to have my camera and the time to get a shot.

This rose was in the rose garden when I took it over. It is a clustered flowered/floribunda rose. I probably would have never bought this rose but it has been a good performer. Its delicate shades orange and pink have been interesting and nice to gaze upon. Disney wanted a tough, low maintenance and I am sure a little showy rose and this one delivers. It is the official rose of The Disneyland® Resort and is planted heavily throughout the park. It is also a Jackson and Perkins New Generation rose, which grow on their own roots.

It is so nice to finally have some roses blooming.


This was a nice combination I saw at work yesterday. Kousa Dogwood and a Rhododendron blooming together. It was better after it rained and the Dogwood was actually hanging into the Rhodo but the picture didn’t come out as well.

Get ready for some Rose photos. I got some good pictures at the Peggy Rockefeller Rose garden in the Bronx. I tried mainly to shoot roses that I don’t already have pictures of. The garden itself was in fine form with thousands of rose bushes producing, I guessing here, tens of thousands flowers. I actually ran out of memory having only brought a 1 GB card with me and I went to the rose garden last. I had to manage my memory a bit which I am not used to doing as I have several cards but only brought one with me.

I couldn’t find many references to this rose on the Internet. It is a beauty but I am a sucker for orange blends. The best I could find is that is a Floribunda Rose that was introduced in 1998. It is repeater bloomer that is hardy to USDA Zone 5. The famous American hybridizer, J. Benjamin Williams, bred this rose. Here is an article on him:
