ABC Wednesday - Tea Crabapple

Tea Crabapple
Malus hupehensis
(MAL-us) (hew-pay-EN-sis)

This week ABC T post is Tea Crabapple. Crabapples are one of my favorite flowering trees to look at, not to grow. They are affected by a lot of different diseases and insects but nothing beats them when they are in flower. This particular Crabapple is unique in a couple different ways. The upright vase shape and the sparse stiff branching pattern are two ways it distinguishes itself. It gets to about 25 to 30 feet tall and is hardy to USDA Zone 4. Another way this Crabapple is special is that it is not as prone to the troubles that other Crabapples are. The flower buds are deep pink and open as blush pink and finish as white. They are quite showy with heavier bloom every other year. These trees bloom here in late April and reddish new leaves that turn green during the summer follow the flowers. What makes a Crabapple a Crabapple and not a regular Apple is the diameter of the fruit. If the fruit has a diameter of 2 inches or less it is considered a Crabapple anything larger is an Apple.

T also stands for Taos Toy store. I shot this picture through a store window in Taos, New Mexico.

Here is a list of participating blogs for ABC Wednesday.

That's one of the advantages for me having two daughters. It's a great excuse for me to have a good wander round a good toy store. I usually head to the remote control car section first. I love the tea crabapple. My friend has an ancient apple tree in his garden. The trunk is almost totally rotten and it's a miracle it still produces fruit let alone stay upright. I'll take some pictures of it next year.

My grandson would love to go into that toy store.

A great "T" post...and made me want to cry! My husband chopped down our crabapple not so long ago due to it having rust and scabbies and you name it, it had it. I was unhappy that he did it before winter as it is/was quite lovely without the leaves on it in the winter time. *sigh* husbands*sigh*

Hi Chris,
I had one of those purple beautyberries once, didn't last long though, to damp for it. The berries are so an unusual colour.
As to the squirrel I donth think it is the same ones as you have.

Love the crab apple colour too.

Cheers Mark

Hi, you must add me to your list. I just started today as well. Your photographs are stunning. I thought crabapples also had to taste terrible to qualify. :-)

I want to go to the Taos Toy Store!

Crabapple jelly is good! That's a neat toy store. Very different from what we see here.

Hello DFP, I really enjoyed reading about the crab. I had a flowering weeping crab when I lived in Wisconsin, a fabulous tree that I loved. Imagine my distress when I learned the person who bought my house didn't like it, thought something was wrong with it because it bent over, cut it down.

I love my crabapples, since the fruit adheres to the trees in the newer varities, there is always food for the birds all winter. The Pilated Woodpeckers are the most common on the tree during the winter. Also have pics of the cedar waxwings having a meal.
Then one year it was the favorite feeding location of a bear, it is right next to our fenced in front yard so I wasnt too crazy about that , plus bears tend to bust trees getting the fruit

Great T post. Unfortunately I can't really join in ABC Wednesday, as I've already got Wordless Wednesday, and Purple Sunday. But it's nice looking at other peoples' contributions and comparing them! :)

These crabapples look nice. Are they edible?

Cheers,

David

Thanks everyone I enjoyed the crabapple stories. The toy store was high-end, if you know what I mean, but had some fantastic things.

David, the apples are edible but very sour. One of guys I work with loves them and would go home all the time with his pockets full but I don't care for them.

I know what you mean about having a lot to do on Wednesday and now other days of the week. I really like the ABC group so that is why I have been sticking with it. I put a link to your site in my side bar. I hope you get some extra traffic from it your work deserves it.
