ABC Wednesday – G is for Green

ABC Wednesday – G is for Green

If you are here for Wordless Wednesday please scroll down to the next post.

This is a Fan Palm frond I saw at the Orchid Show. Whilst everyone else was snapping pictures of the flowers I liked the way the light and shadows played on this leaf. It was taken with my Sigma 17-70mm lens (38 mm, F/5, 1/100 sec, for those interested), and the Nikon D70s.

I have a special love affair with Palm Trees. Maybe because they represent far off locales and tropical scenes or maybe it is their structure and geometry. Either way I find them fascinating. In the Conservatory at work there are several nice specimens of different Palms and some are quite large but it is a poor second to see these beauties in their natural habitat.

Green is an interesting color. It is said to have a calming effect on the mind and the body and it is considered to be a healing color. It has become a buzzword of the environmental movement and if something is said to be ‘green’ in that sense it is thought to be environmentally friendly. Of course for Americans it is the color of money.

This was an assignment from a Photoshop class I took awhile back. The topic was selective coloring and I picked green as my color. The first picture was boat I saw in Padstow, Cornwall. I converted the background to Black and White (which was fitting since it was a dreary day) and left the boat green. The boat’s name was ‘Diadem’ which means “a royal headband or something that adorns like a crown”.

This second picture is from our local train museum and the train was actually grey before the conversion. This locomotive and cars is from the old New Haven Central Line. It’s a EMD E-9A Diesel Electric Locomotive for you train buffs.

I am having computer troubles today. I can't figure out if it is the hardware or the strong winds. I am using my wife's computer to post this comment. I not sure how many people I can visit today but will try and catch when this gets straightened out.

Thanks so much for visiting and leaving a comment.

The photoshop tinkering is cool. I like the palm and the fact you managed to see that when everyone around you was distracted by the fancier part.

Digital Flower Pictures said...

Thanks everyone. gypsy you hit pretty well for me. I was happy to be thinking outside of the box. It is sometimes easy to get in a rut with the camera. I am just happy it came out well.

The mystery in the palm photo is very engaging. This image could be on a cover of a novel, framed and on display in a home or gallery - it's marvelous. And, yes, it's green, glorious green.

I like how you converted the photos to have a green hue. Love the lines of the frond and the light shining through it. I know how you feel about everyone taking the commonplace photos while you take something out of the ordinary. Good for you!

Love the isolated green..and the way the light goes through the fronds of the palm.

That is a beautiful picture of the palm. I too love the way palms look. I have a hard time not taking a picture of a palm. Their leaves are always very interesting.

I did some colouring of black and white silver gelatine prints, but haven't even tried to play with the digital ones. Your creations make me want to! Thank you.

I came over from David's place.

These are brilliant but my favourite is the palm. Natural and unusual. Great use of lighting and angle. Love it.

Palms have a special place in my heart too. Your perspective is fresh and painterly.

Your other "greened" photos are wonderful too.

David sent me over. A soothing eyeful. Thank you.
