This has been a great variety of rose. The weather here somewhat cooperated with rose growing last season. By the looks of it the winter won’t be too harsh on them either. I will probably go out and check today as some of the bushes maybe waking up. I have noticed several plants whose buds are starting to swell. I like to remove the heavy mulch from roses as they emerge. There are a couple of Witch Hazels (Hamamelis) in full bloom now and they seem to be fairly reliable for February bloom here in Connecticut. The recent really cold temperatures didn’t seem to have a great effect on their floral show.

The second photo here caught an interloper on one of the petals. An adult spotted cucumber beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata), which I didn’t realize was such a pest. It chews up the flowers, leaves and pollen of many species of plants, particularly loving members of the Sunflower family. There is usually minimal damage unless present in large numbers.

Couple of roses for Sunday. This first rose has a great fiery orange/coral color that is hard to match. The flowers grow on a tall, strong bush that seems relatively disease resistant. I am not sure why but the flowers on the two bushes I have grown always seem to be on kind of the small side. The advertised size of the flowers is 6 inches across but mine can hardly muster 3 or 4 inches. Despite that it is always nice to see the flowers because of the way the sunlight can make them appear to glow. The fragrance is intoxicating too. If you only have room for a couple of roses I probably wouldn’t recommend ‘Spice Twice’ unless of course you are a sucker for that color (like me). ‘Tropicana’ can kind of supply the color on a much better growing rose.

Today’s bonus snapshot is an unknown red rose. Guessing I am going to say ‘Don Juan’ but am not really sure. The sides of the photo have had a vignette placed there to get rid of a really busy background and try and show just the summer richness of the rose.

The storm frenzy continues to grow around here and we are now solidly in what I call the ‘Cone of Doom’, which is the projected path of the storm. Overnight bad news came from the west coast as a big earthquake hit the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia. Luckily the area is sparsely populated and there wasn’t much damage according to news reports so far. Having spent quite a bit of time in that area I always had a little nagging fear of the areas natural beauty. It is almost too majestic. The bad news is a tsunami is headed for Hawaii where my sister lives. I am never sure if I should pick up the phone and call even though it is in the middle of the night there. She lives in up country Maui at about 1,000 feet above sea level and there is a warning horn like 100 yards from her house so I figure that she is safe.

The name has escaped on this first rose but I am guessing Hybrid Tea. Both of these pictures are from a “roll” of unlooked at black and white photos I took last year. These were taken with my compact Nikon Coolpix 8400 camera in the monochrome mode. Sometimes I use the smaller/slower flash cards for the compact cameras and often leave them in there for a long time or don’t process them right away. That is what leads to their lost roll status.

After many years running a gardening business we have decided to give that up and concentrate on one garden. As I hinted at before I have accepted the position of head gardener at 26 acre garden on Long Island’s Gold Coast. The garden is totally amazing and has been well cared for. There will be some pictures of the flowers coming soon. I plan on keeping an extensive journal some of which may end up being published here.

There seems to be some debate on whether or not this flower is a biennial or perennial. My experiences have been mostly biennial and if we get 2 or 3 years out of them we are happy. Dianthus seems to thrive in the drier areas of the garden with unimproved soil. The edge of masonry work with even a little stone dust from the stonework mixed in seems to suit it best. Winter drainage is also an important part of keeping them going. It is true garden classic that has been around a long time. Lately some new cultivars have been showing up due to breeding so they may be more perennial. This type grows 8-12 inches tall and gets nice dark foliage later in the season. It is said the flowers smell like chocolate but I can’t confirm or deny that.

This is a really beautiful hybrid tea rose. It is quite old having been introduced in 1963. I always have a lot of respect for a rose that can last that long on the market. It can be susceptible to black spot and other rose problems but you forget all about that when you have cut a few of the flowers for the house. It certainly lives up to its name then.

Well something happened to my ‘Peace’ rose and a few other varieties and they grew these enormous sized roses on small bushes. This flower was easily two or three times the size of a regular Peace. It really looked like some abnormal burst of energy had come out. I was a little afraid for the plant since the flowers were almost as big but it has seemed to settle back into its routine of producing normal sized flowers. The roses in general look good and have been holding out despite the heat and humidity. Yesterday was kind of a statistical oddity in the fact we got over an inch of rain and the temperatures were only in the high 60’s. Felt a bit more like September than July.

Mr. Lincoln Hybrid Tea Rose

It is always fun to cover a classic here and this rose is one. ‘Mr. Lincoln’ grows with a typical hybrid tea form and can get a little tall and thin if left to its own devices. Overall the wonderful color and fragrance win the day for this rose. It can get diseased but is fairly resistance for one of the older roses in the garden. If you like red roses “Mr. Lincoln’ delivers a powerful punch.

This little gaggle of snapdragons was fun to see. This flower seems to be making a resurgence despite some urban legends about its cultivation. I have to admit I was surprised to see it blooming so nicely after all the heat we have had. This is one of the taller types.

We haven’t had time to fully evaluate this rose but so far it seems good. The flowers are so classically shaped and have a strong rose fragrance. This might be the perfect pink cutting rose and that is what we want it for. Here are a few facts on ‘Falling in Love’:

The new roses went in the big rose garden and some how we ended up with 8 specimens of ‘Tropicana’. Three are old stock and that indicates good hardiness to me. It is such a classy and stately rose that I am happy to have a lot of them. This rose is easily in my top five of all time. The color is a little different on the second picture because that rose gets a little more shade (still mostly full sun). I briefly entertained the thought of doing some disbudding to make them all bloom at once but that timing will be to hard to pull off with the nature of this garden. They are having a huge wedding (400+ guests) there this weekend and we did everything we could to make it perfect. The roses didn’t really cooperate but were showing some color and the foliage is clean.

Well I caused quite a stir on a guitar forum that I read and post on. The topic was modifying my 1959 Fender Jazzmaster. It caused a big storm with 99% of people against it. I want to use the neck on another guitar but I half expected death threats because of that. The neck is the only thing that I really like about the guitar but it will be kept stock for now.

This rose once again made it on to the replacement list and entered the garden with a great flush of flowers. One thing you will notice about this rose is the size of the flowers. They are huge. The color is outstanding and gets better as the buds open up. The somewhat mild fragrance is also nice. ‘Brandy’ is not shy and turns into a nice, sturdy rose bush. It is a prolific bloomer and flowers through the season. Overall it gets an 8.5-9 (out of 10) on Chris’s little scale of roses.

The rose garden has perked up nicely but still won’t be where I want it on Memorial Day Weekend. Those couple of late frosts really did some damage to the tender new growth. The roses are kind of shaking that off now and starting to grow in earnest.

While there isn’t usually a desire to post a specific flower on this blog today I did want to post a couple of roses. Both were shot at the big Botanical Garden in Orlando. My visit was on a spectacular day and the rose garden sure added to that. I was struck by the complex blend of color shades on this rose. The flowers were not large but had a pleasant scent.

Since it is Sunday here is a bonus snapshot of another hybrid tea rose. The flowers again had a beautiful blend and this particular rose was emerging at a funny angle.

It seems to have a lot of synonyms but has been around since the early 1980’s. A sweet smelling rose that grows on a short compact bush. It also has nicely shaped buds.

‘Tiffany’ is a beautiful rose and I can’t believe it has never made it onto Digital Flower pictures.com before. It always seems to be sporting a new flush of the soft and luscious pink blooms in the garden. It is a tall and stately plant that seems to be somewhat resistant to disease. 

Bred in 1954 by Robert V. Lindquist and introduced the same year ‘Tiffany’ has won many awards, including the AARS award in 1955. The flowers are about average size with a petal count of 25-30. The flowers are well formed and color shaded with a strong fragrance.

This rose is one of my all time favorites. I am talking stranded on desert island type of flower. The shading and shape of the flower is almost perfect as is the fragrance and general grace of the plant. It can get disease but for the most part it is an easy rose to grow. Did I just say that about a Hybrid Tea rose? :lol:

Is anyone else happy it is March? Spring looms off in the close shadows and is full of promise. March didn’t really come in like a lion it kind of limped in. We are expecting 60 degrees F. here tomorrow. With that kind of action there will be Snowdrops and Daffodils out soon.

This picture is a bit of an anomaly here as it was shot with the D70s and the Sigma F2.8-4 DC Macro lens. The lens is really deep back up and is probably the only lens in my bag that I don’t really like. The other Sigma lenses (28-200, 24mm/1.8) in the bag are fine but there is something about the 17-70 that just isn’t great. It is a lens that I regret buying in hindsight.

Another day another rose. I am posting this picture since I slogged my back up body (D70s) and some lenses for it through the Florida sun. It ended up taking 36 pictures and quite a few of them came out nice. This was taken with Sigma 24mm/1.8 lens and it seems to be a good match for camera.

‘Cesar E. Chavez’ is a deep red rose and the color is really only partially rendered here. The shape and color of this rose is so classic. Its parents are ‘Olympiad’ and ‘Ingrid Bergman’ two very beautiful red hybrid teas. ‘Cesar E. Chavez’ was introduced to the US in 2002 by Jackson & Perkins. It could have a spot in any garden I tend to.

Since it is a travel day here is just one of the stunning roses we saw here in Central Florida. The roses in general were having a great season and I gazed upon them with admiration and wonder. This hybrid Tea had such a gentle color and appearance. The strong fragrance was nice too.
