Aloe
Of all the plants blooming in San Diego last month the Aloes were one of the most stunning. Their spear like flowers came in a variety of colors (mostly red, yellow and orange) and shapes. I have seen Aloes blooming in Florida before but not on the scale that Southern California has them.
Now I have read that there are 250 species of Aloe and also there are 400 species! Not sure which is the most accurate but I know the plant nomenclature changes so maybe that is what happened. Lets just say a large group of species. They are mostly native to Southern Africa although have now spread throughout the world. The leaves are tender but the roots can tolerate frosts but not freezing.
I took a lot of pictures of various Aloes. Most were not identified by species but will be popping up here and there on this blog.
Today Karen and I are going to the New York Orchid show. We have to get ready to leave because it is best to get there early.
I am looking forward to clicking around and seeing other flowers from around the world: Today’s Flowers . It starts at 18:00 GMT on Sunday.

Beautiful photos. I particularly like the first...
How interesting! The only aloe I've ever seen are the kind you slice up and put on sunburn!
Your Aloe captures are quite spectacular! That first macro shot is to die for. I mainly grow the medicinal Aloe vera. They are in the main a group of very hardy plants.
Absolutely stunning! Both your photoes and the flowers! I am a "fan" of macroshots, and these are special!
I have seen flowers on alo just once, and that was a long thing with small white flowers. The ones you show is much more of a firework!
Did you see the aloe post at Gardengonewild.com? I never knew to appreciate the flowers.
Wonderful pictures, great colours!
Just beautiful Aloe flowers!
Beautiful shots ...
Thanks for sharing..
Your photography is simply stunning! I am impressed. So glad I stopped by.
Another plant that I hade never thought about blossoms for. Here they are just grown in pots. But they are certainly fireworks!! Gorgeous flowers!! And I agree that the macro shot is truly impressive!!
Your photos are superb and it's a good idea to watermark them. I just planted some purple ballerina poppies and hope they come up. I have never planted them before. In June I will get my chrysanthemum seedlings in Marin.
These photos wowed me...really stunning. Thanks for sharing their beauty with us.
